Candidate entering the PhD and MPhil programme must normally have completed a taught master’s degree (MSc – MA – MBA – LLM) at a recognized university. The masters should have normally be in the same or near discipline as the proposed research and should have been completed with a satisfactory grade.
Applicants are required to submit a brief research proposal. This should include a preliminary title for the research project, identify the main area of research (e.g. geographical region, time-period, language), comment critically on the existing literature and indicate the likely sources for the research.
Applications will also be judged on the basis of a short proposal outlining the intended research, reference letters from academics, and often for students who are present, and an interview.
It is necessary in the UK to possess a high standard of English. All applicants whose mother tongue is not English will be required to take the test in English run by the British Council’s International English Testing Services (IELTS) and demonstrate a level of proficiency acceptable to the university (6.5).
